Course Contents

1

Scratch

Scratch is a visual programming language that is mainly used by children, all over the globe. This visual language is in the shape of blocks, and it allows its users to create online projects, games, apps, and many other things.By learning Scratch, children are able to program their own stories, games and animations by themselves. Scratch is intended to help “young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively — essential skills for life in the 21st century”. Scratch has both an online platform, as well as an offline editor for children.

2

HTML

HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is a language of the web fir building web pages and web based applications.HTML is very easy to learn and understand. For the one who is learning web development, HTML is the first and foremost language that the person will go through. For the programmer to be a successful web developer, they would have to start with HTML. With this they can create beautiful websites and web applications.

3

CSS

Cascading Style Sheets is an important way to control how your web pages look. CSS controls the fonts, text, colors, backgrounds, margins, and layout. CSS offers several significant advantages over alternative approaches to web design. After learning HTML you are limited to the amount of design you can use, but with CSS you can explore any design you want for the website.

4

Javascript

JavaScript is a tool for developers to add interactivity to websites. Along with HTML and CSS, JavaScript forms the basis of front-end web development, allowing the creating of interactive elements. Things like menus, animations, video players, interactive maps, and even simple in-browser games can be created quickly and easily with JavaScript. It should be sold more. Knowledge of JavaScript empowers the programmer with skills to be efficient in frontend, backend, mobile and internet of things.

Chimdi Jane Samuel – Queen of codes

Chimdi Jane Samuel is an undergraduate student of the University of Lagos. She started teaching kids how to code in 2019, together with Teens Can Code and Google CS First, to which she registered as a volunteer. She was able to complete a week teaching to Introduction to Computer Science, and programming using Scratch. During this excersice, along with her colleagues, they were able to empower about 50 kids to build thier own animations.

A few months after that, together with Teens Can Code and Microbit, she also volunteered to teach kids of age 10-15 how to program a Microbit using Scratch. (The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer that introduces you to how software and hardware work together). After a successful exercise, the children were able to program the microbit to show display numbers and play music.
